The Finnish Sauna - An Introduction to the Finnish Language

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Pertti Olavi Jalasjaa Among the great benefits a traditional Finnish sauna offers is a thorough cleansing of the body. The heat of the sauna helps to open pores in the skin and flush out built-up bacteria through heavy perspiration. Regular sauna use is also good for blood circulation, pain relief, and strengthening the bodys immune system. Health benefits such as these have been touted in numerous books and articles that have been written on the subject of Finnish saunas. However, there is one potential benefit of traditional sauna bathing that has been repeatedly overlooked by even the most fervent supporters of the Finnish sauna. As obvious as it may seem in hindsight, its still worth mentioning: the traditional Finnish sauna bath can serve as a great introduction to the Finnish language. The word sauna itself is a Finnish word. In fact, it is the only word of Finnish origin that has established such a secure place for itself in the English language. Ask yourself what other word better describes a sauna than sauna. While not yet accepted into the English language, there are some other Finnish words that define important aspects of the authentic Finnish sauna experience. The word kiuas, for example, describes the traditional Finnish sauna stove or sauna heater that holds and heats the sauna rocks that are such an integral part of the Finnish sauna. When water is tossed upon these hot sauna rocks, steam is then produced. The Finnish word for this steam (so esteemed by Finnish sauna enthusiasts) is loyly. In a traditional Finnish sauna, bathers sit on wooden benches. To the Finnish people, these benches are known as lauteet. Each bench, or laude, is placed at a height in the sauna room where the bather can enjoy the air as hot as he or she can tolerate it. Adding to the pleasure of a traditional Finnish sauna experience is the vihta or vasta, a thick bunch of young, leafy birch twigs that are tied together and used by the sauna bather to slap on him or herself (without causing pain) to promote blood circulation and cleanse the skin. In countries where tender birch is not as readily available as it is in Finland, the vihta or vasta can consist of cedar or poplar twigs. The actual slapping of the vihta or vasta is known as vihtoa in Finnish. Sauna, kiuas, loyly, laude, lauteet, vihta, vasta, vihtoa. Congratulations on completing your first Finnish vocabulary lesson. Addiction Marketing

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Mike Myatt Addiction Marketing is a phrase I coined a few years back while waiting in line for my drink at Starbucks. I was observing the mass of people who like lost explorers in the desert rushing for an oasis seemed to be desperate for their daily (if not more frequent) fix of caffeine. It was at that moment that I realized that one of Starbucks key business drivers, if not their most critical business driver, was that Starbucks sells products that cater to peoples addictive tendencies. What Starbucks has done better than many other addictive marketers is that they also make it cool and trendy to succumb to your addiction. In todays blog post Ill examine addiction as a key success factor in business. When I was in school economics professors would lecture on using supply and demand drivers to create a business advantagebusiness professors would evangelize the strengths of the recurring value and stability of consumable productsmarketing professors would espouse the benefits of relationship marketing, but nowhere do I recall being able to register for a class on addiction. However if you think about Addiction Marketing youll quickly realize what the media pushers on Madison Avenue and the product development and marketing gurus in the corporate world have known for yearsall people have their unique set of vulnerabilities that if creatively and effectively exploited will lead to strong sales and powerful brands. If you read the business news over the weekend youll have noticed that the Indian government is attempting to force Coca Cola and Pepsi to divulge the formulas to their popular beverage products. One of the charges being upheld in the Indian High Court is that Coke and Pepsi products are addictive and unhealthyHmmmExamine the following representative list of successful businesses and/or industries and come to your own conclusions as to whether these businesses or industries prey on the addictions of consumers world-wide to generate their revenue: Las Vegas The tagline What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas caters to virtually every possible addiction under the sunSin City lives up to its reputation. Tag Body Spray Tags recent commercial campaign has taken the phrase Sex Sells to a whole new levelIn this campaign all an adolescent male needs to do is to spray himself with the Tag product and he finds himself instantly being attacked by hordes of attractive young womenIf you have a teenage son, it would be a safe bet that Tag is his cologne of choice. The Beer and Alcohol Industry You will be hard pressed to find a beer or alcohol company that doesnt portray consumption of their beverage as the key ingredient to a lifestyle of fast cars, beautiful women, successful careers, etc. The Tobacco Industry The tobacco industry has been publicly hammered for selling products that leverage the addictive effects of Nicotine and even with all the known health hazards smokers face, in many instances the addictive nature of the product is greater than peoples ability to make a logical decision. I dont think anyone will dispute the examples noted in the above list as obviously preying on consumers addictive tendencies. However what about the more subtle side of the addiction business? Isnt Starbucks using the same addictive business tactics as those industries listed above? What about companies in the luxury products sector? Companies that sell high end products and services cater to the elitist attitudes of this segment allowing consumers to make statements about their socioeconomic status based on the products they purchase. Is this not also catering to addictive tendencies? OK, now Ill hit a little closer to homeWhat about my companys value proposition? We sell successIs it not possible to look at success as being an addiction? How about the social networking industry? Are social networkers and bloggers addicted to the interaction, attention, etc. that the new media platform affords? While I could go on, I think my point has been madeIm certainly not implying that all consumers are addicts, nor am I implying that all companies are pushers, but I am pointing out that addiction marketing sells and that many companies use this as a strategic advantage. In fact, I believe the evidence is clear that a business can create a strong strategic advantage in sustainability if they find no ethical flaw in what Ive coined as Addiction Marketing. The bottom line is that I love to travel and watch movies and I dont think it makes me an escapistI have a penchant for Starbucks (venti caramel frappacinos in particular) and I dont think Im a caffeine addict, I appreciate the fine clothes and quality automobiles and I dont believe that makes me a social elitist. However I have also come to realize that my perceived addictive tendencies are clearly attempting to be preyed upon by creative and intelligent marketing and product development efforts. Ill leave you with the following questions to ponder: What is the difference between pleasure and addiction? Do you feel Addiction Marketing is ethical? Does your company partake in addictive marketing strategies and tactics? And, when was the last time you made a purchase based upon your addiction? Payday Loans are the World’s Most Expensive Cash

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Charles_Essmeier]Charles Essmeier If someone told you that they would lend you $500 today if you repaid them with $5000 a year from now, would you take it? What if the repayment amount were only $2500? Would that strike you as a good deal? This may sound like an insane amount to repay on a small loan, but that, in effect, is what thousands of consumers do every day when they take out a payday loan. Payday loans, also known as cash advance or quick cash loans, are short term loans that typically last about two weeks. In exchange for borrowing relatively small sums ranging from $100-500, the borrower pays a fee that can range from $10-40 per $100 borrowed for the two-week loan. The borrower writes a postdated check for the borrowed sum plus the fee, which the lender may cash two weeks later. These fees may seem relatively small, but when viewed as an annual percentage rate, they actually amount to anywhere between 250-1000% per year. That’s an astronomical amount of interest in a world where a credit card loan at 25% is considered to be high. And yet, the payday loan business is thriving and there are now some 23,000 stores in America that offer some form of these cash advance loans. Why do people take out such loans? The primary reasons are convenience and a lack of better alternatives. These stores are now so common that there are often several of them on a single block. They don’t do credit checks and they will lend money to pretty much anyone with a steady job. And the borrowers tend to be people who do not have access to other borrowing options, such as credit cards, friends with money or a local credit union that offers short term loans. Defenders of these financial products say that they are simply offering a product that the public wants. That may very well be true, as these businesses are doing very well. What remains to be answered is whether the public really wants to borrow money at 500% per year. In all likelihood, they are doing so only because they cannot find a less expensive option. Anyone who needs a short term loan is more than welcome to go to a payday loan store to get one. But any potential borrowers should realize that they making use of one of the world’s most expensive forms of lending. Copyright 2006 by Retro Marketing. Success in Marriage Redefined

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Shei Tan Successful marriages means the working out of a relationship which is increasingly satisfying and worthful to all concerned. Wrong Reasons Many couples have clung together long after their marriages have lost their purposes, just because they wanted to show others that they could “succeed.” Others have remained together because of social pressure, religious demands, or just because of their pride. We do not say that they were wrong in so doing. We do say that marriages which can be held together only by such reasons are not successful. A Larger Purpose Success in terms of the development of a rich relationship will best result as the outgrowth of larger purposes around which the whole life is organized. The purpose may be social. For centuries there was no divorce in Rome. Why? Because the family did not exist for the satisfaction of the individual. Its purpose was to provide disciplined citizens for the state; citizens who would be its soldiers or the mothers of soldiers. The Real Secret The marriage of many couples today is the joining together in some common cause to which both are dedicated. The cause may be foreign missions. It may be world peace. It may be what is the essence of religion at its best; the dedication of self to the creative forces of life. But whatever it is, when this larger purpose is present, the couple has a basis for success! Delaying Gratification For Long-Range Objectives - Huh?

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Cathy Leman In short, the title of this article is simply describing what most people have an extremely difficult time doing keeping at bay the short-term feel-goodness of instant gratification in order to achieve a goal. In other words, think retirement. If you spent every single penny you earned on things that made you instantly happy, a long-range goal of retiring would be out of reach (barring a windfall of cash from a long-lost relative or winning the lottery). Now apply that to setting goals for weight loss or eating healthier. If you have to eat a hot fudge sundae every time you pass an ice cream shop because you feel you deserve it or it will instantly make you feel better, your chances of losing weight are decreased. If you feel that lounging on the sofa every night vs. going for a walk will make you feel better, your chances of getting into shape are decreased. However, at the same time that you engage in these goal-destroying behaviors and habits, you carry around the notion that you want to lose XX number of pounds, or tone up and get stronger. How in the world will that happen if you cant reach your long-term goal? By setting short-term goals. Rather than ordering that hot fudge sundae every week, set a goal of cutting down to once per month. Rather than sitting on the sofa EVERY night, set a goal of walking 3 evenings. These are interim, short-term goals that move you specifically toward a long-term goal. And yes, they involve delayed gratification. The gratification comes when that snug pair of pants now has breathing room, or you lift the blow dryer to do your hair and see your bicep pop out! See? Its easy once you practice. Now, whats your short-term goal for this week? And what can you push aside in order to reap a later, healthy reward? Sell Hobby Items by Mail

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By DeAnna Spencer You can, if you are ambitious, start a Mail Order Business selling collectables to hobbiest by mail. To begin, you must first find a hobby that appeals to YOU. Next, you must spend several weeks researching that hobby. You must learn what collectors want and how much they are willing to pay for it. You should also know what other dealers are willing to pay forthe merchandise which they sell. And you must be willing to pay the same amounts. Perhaps you already know exactly what you want to sell. If youhave been collecting old Valentines, then start a Mail Orderbusiness buying and selling old Valentines. Or Stamps. Or Comic Books. The first rule of Mail Order selling is to sell what you yourself would buy. To give you an idea of what collectors buy and sell by mail, here is a partial list of today’s collectables: Phonograph Records, Cigar Label, License Plates,Beer Labels, Circus Posters, Music Boxes,Salt/Pepper Shakers, Greeting Cards, Old Pencils,Atlases, Military Medals, Sheet Music,Doll Clothes, Menus, Cigar Boxes,Train Photos, Old Calendars, MapsStreet, Car Tokens, Buttons, Postcards,Fruit, Car Tokens, Fruit Jar Labels, Old Magazines,Gun Catalogs, Paper Currency, Cartoon Books, Theatre Programs, Political Buttons, Baseball Cards,Children’s Books, Stock Certificates, Old Toys,Gems, Minerals, Belt Buckles, Airplane Photos,FBI Posters, Newspapers, Coins,Arrowheads, Old Jewelry, Boat Photographs, Advertising Cards, Dog Pictures, Movie Magazines, Autographs, Dolls, Hunting Licenses,Valentines, Cookbooks, Beatle Items,Stamps, Indian Relics, Railroad Books, Fishing Licenses, Comic Books, Thimbles, Automobile Manuals, Diaries, Railroad Passes, Antique Barbed Wire Once you have selected your field, start a file. Keep copies ofall the ads selling your kind of merchandise. Also keep adsshowing the dealer’s buying prices. If price lists ar offeredin ads, send for them and STUDY them. MAKE YOURSELF AN EXPERTIN YOUR FIELD. Try to locate any publications that deal with your field. Often, you can locate small mimeographed publications andnewsletters which will give you all kinds of useful information. Your next step is to look for merchandise in your own community. Here are some suggestions: Start by attending flea markets and antique shoes. Don’t be afraid to make inquiries of dealers. They often have what they consider “junk” stashed away, assuming that it isn’t of muchvalue to anyone. I once discovered a fabulous stamp collectionthat way! Browse around through Thrift Shops. Study the garage sale ads in your local newspaper. Visit any that sound promising. (Sometimes, it pays to telephone first. Also, by telling people what kind of merchandise you are looking for, they may be able to direct you to others who have exactlywhat you need!) Place “Wanted to Buy” ads in your local newspaper. Be sure to list your phone number. It is amazing what you can find in your local community if you work at it. However, if you can’t find enough merchandiselocally, run ads in the Collector’s Magazines listed above. Their rates are very, very low. And you will soon discover that they are widely read! Once you have accumulated a decent stock of merchandise, you are ready to begin selling it. If there are publicationsspecializing in your field, by all means advertise there. Youhave a ready-made audience! Also run ads in the big hobbymagazines. Type up a list of what you have and have an Instant Printer make a hundred or so copies for you. Hobbyists don’t mind typewritten, mimeographed, or xerox copies . . . it’s half thefund of collecting. Then run your ad. Your ad can merely offeryour list to interested collectors free (or for a stamp, to weedout coupon clippers). Or you can offer to make a sale straightfrom the ad. If you do the latter, stick in your price listwith the merchandise. It will be read . . . eagerly! Here are a few sample ads run by hobby dealers for your consideration: “Railroad Timetables, 1940’s Four different - $4.00 postpaid.. “Old Children’s Books and Texts. Stamp for List.” “85,000 Comic Books, Movie Magazines, Funnies, etc. 1900-1957. Catalog $1.00 (Refundable).” “Original Movie Poster, Pressbooks, Stills, 1919-1975. Catalog - 50 cents” “Sleigh Bells! Stamp for list.” “Sheet Music. SASE for list.” Just in case you are not familiar with the phrase, “SASE” means “Self-addressed, stamped envelope”. As you progress, you will learn continually. Most hobby dealers will tell you that they learn more from the collectors who buy from them than they could ever learn from any other source. Study Manager

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Sharon White Thus, each person who is involved in study process and has to effectively learn much information in time limits is to be a good manager for his/her study. So each student is to know basic managerial techniques and should develop management skills. For students it would be very useful to start a study manager notes in a notebook specially designed for study management purpose. The notes should start with reflecting primary needs in general. These general needs would remind a student his/her primary study goals so that each time he or she opens a notebook he/she would see the main study feedback which stimulates good study. For example, it is useful to start notes with phrases like I want to earn . dollars an hour. or I want to work for. Company. or I want to live in. etc. Such primary goals would not only help focus on studying but also work as a drive force for self-development. The study manager notebook should be divided into the parts which would reflect the main management techniques. First, a student should make a table which contains planning. In order to organize planning student should make outlines weekly. These outlines would follow weekly tasks, each task should be fixed in an outline table and followed by the time planned to spend to implement this task and by the effect column which would reflect students achievements. It is also useful to add a marks column which would reflect extra needs and failures while the task implementation. The second part of the study manager should contain goals/achievements. This part may be in either freely written form or a scheme/picture. Here the ideal scheme would be if goals strictly reflect achievements. However, extra achievements which have not been planned but reached due to students extra work would be an excellent tool to be study well motivated. Thus, extra achievements would be better to put in some bright colors. Comparing with outline table goal/achievements part should be written once a month. The third part of the study manager notebook should reflect students thoughts and ideas regarding his/her study needs, dreams, changes and preferences. It is not a real reflection of what student has got nowadays. However, his/her dreams and preferences would help him/her determine his/her future needs and choose the right direction to reach his/her dreams. Everybody knows that unreal dreams are the best strategy for future reality. Each student should remember that and fill the third part of his study manager with the dreams and needs which are even not seemed to become real in a future. Dreams/needs part is better to be written once a year.Study manager is an excellent tool to develop good skills, find free time and achieve success in study and daily life. Cell Phones: The Only Phone You Need

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeanette_Pollock]Jeanette Pollock A growing number of Americans use their cell phones as their only phones, and the use of cell phones instead of land lines is even more common in Europe and Asia. How should you decide if cell phones could handle all your telecommunication needs? One reason many people used to keep their home phones was their phone number. Today the law allows you to “port” those numbers, even to cell phones. Many people have also found that the “free nights and weekends” offered by most cell phones allows them to scale back their home phone payments. However, to compete with cell phones, the landlines companies have begun offering competitive prices that include unlimited calling. Using cell phones for all your phone calls can be more expensive than using land lines for all your phone calls. But since most people today use cell phones, upgrading your package of services from the cell phones company could still be cheaper than maintaining both cell phones and land lines. There are some reasons why you might not want to let cell phones be your only phones. If you use dial-up Internet access, it’s a lot more difficult and expensive to use cell phones than landlines for that purpose. If you’re used to having a phone in every room, you might not want to just have one cell phone unless you are used to carrying it with you at all times. Also, if you do a lot of talking, cell phones need to “sleep” once in a while to recharge their batteries. If your cell phone goes dead while you’re talking, it will take a while before you can finish the conversation. Relief from Monetary Troubles with Bad Credit Loans

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Taylor]Peter Taylor A lender lends you his money for fulfilling your dreams. Its obvious before lending he will make sure that he will be getting his money back at the time of repayment. This surety is given by your credit record in the past. It is believed that if you are good with repayments in the past, then you will be a preferred choice of the lenders. But the problem starts when you are having a bad credit score. The concept of bad credit loans are meant for such people. What is a bad credit? How it arises? How will I know my credit score? A bad credit score can be defined as the reflection of your bad management of debts in the past. It arises due to various reasons such as non-payments or late payments of the debt installments; large number of debts, unpaid credit card bills, bankruptcy, CCJs and IVAs taken in the past etc. Lenders will look at your credit score while processing your loan request. You can get your credit score along with credit report from credit rating agencies namely Experian, Equifax and Transunion at some charge. What is a bad credit loan? Bad credit loans are loans to give financial support to the people with poor credit score to get their wants satisfied. You can apply for such loans with or without the option of letting your asset as collateral. When you offer your collateral the loan is considered as secured and offers you better rates with longer repayment terms. But the other form also has its advantages as when you apply for an unsecured bad credit loan you may get a slightly higher interest rate but it gives you the freedom from the stress and anxiety of loosing your asset along with faster approval for your urgent needs. How can I use the loan amount? Bad credit secured loans gives you with the option to use the loan amount the way you want. You can use the loan amount for debt consolidation, buying property, home improvement, starting new business, holidaying around, buying a car or boat, funding the education or health expenses. Some lenders may not even ask you for the purpose for which you are taking loan depending upon their policies. Where to find a bad credit loan and how to apply? For finding out a good bad credit loan deal you need to shop for loans in the market. But we all know that it may not be possible to visit each and every lender. Instead of this we can search for online loan lenders. There are lots of benefits applying online as there are no upfront costs, debt and repayment calculators for comparing loan quotes, reduced paperwork. Bad credit loans are becoming the choice of borrowers with the increase in the number of people with bad credit. Peter Taylor is a senior financial analyst at LoansX with an acumen for finance and insurance.
