Planning a Fishing Vacation

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Sarah Freeland Planning a fishing vacation shouldnt be any more stressful than the trip itself. It really isnt much different from planning a vacation or any other kind of multi-day outing. Some of the questions youll need to ask are specific to the resort, and some refer to your legal rights and obligations. Planning a fly fishing vacation? Well, think about answers to some questions, first. What type of fly fishing to you prefer? This can help you decide what time of year you want to travel. And what fishing equipment youll need. With whom would you like to travel? Would you consider plotting a fly-fishing honeymoon with your intended? Did you ever think about bringing your family fly-fishing? In any case, schedule at least two weeks so that youll have enough time for additional activities, from day hikes to horseback riding. Basic questions help you plan your trip, even if you dont go to the first resort you investigate. Whats the best time of year to visit? Most lodges arent responsible for briefing you on the local fishing regulations, so youll have some more research to do. Youll have to get your own documents, whether a fishing license, travel insurance, a passport, or proof of boat and vehicle ownership. When youre talking to owners of fishing resorts, make sure that you ask the crucial questions. How up to date are their boats? Is there a store nearby, for bait or personal items? Do fishing guides work at the lodge? If you can work with a guide, you might want to consider hiring one of them, even if its just so that you learn the lake for a day. What are the costs? Keep an eye out for hidden costs. Ask for example, what charges you should anticipatewhether for life jacket rental, docking and lunch fees, bait, gas for the boat, or fishing maps. The more you know beforehand, the less likely youll feel ripped off. Natural Weight Loss Equals Effective Weight Loss

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Dan Patterson With so many different products and magic weight loss pills on the market, many people seem to be turning away from the standard, tried and proven methods of losing weight. And the enticement is very real! Who wouldnt love to just pop a pill, not change anything in their lifestyle, and lose 10 pounds a week? While many of the diet and weight loss supplements on the market can be very effective aids in losing weight, they should not be the focus of a weight loss mentality or program. So lets get back to the basics. The basics in natural weight loss and weight management are the following: nutrition and exercise. In this article we will discuss these two main topics in the categories of diet, resistance training, and cardio exercise. Diet and Nutrition While its very clich to say that you are what you eat, there is a lot of truth to this statement. Lets look deeper at this statement and think about some every day examples and evidences of this statement as well. Think about the last time you went to an all-you-can-eat buffet. For the most part, what was the overall physical condition of the people eating there? You make the call: are people that eat in the style of an all-you-can-eat buffet becoming what they eat? Does eating large amounts of food high in fat make your body react a certain way? Of course it does! Granted, this is some what of an extreme example, but the concept is true. Eating clean and reducing highly processed foods, lots of sugar, and the wrong types of fat will definitely help your body composition. For a great example of this, see the movie Super-size Me. Resistance Training There are many different types of resistance training that are effective. Weight training, pilates, yoga all can be effective ways to get your body moving. Why is resistance training than cardio training? Because resistance training helps to build muscle more than anything else. Simply put, if your body has more muscle it tends to function and burn fat more effectively. So in summary, resistance training does more than just get your heart pumping and your muscles burning, but it builds muscle and improves your overall physical appearance and condition. Cardio Training As with resistance training, there are many ways to do cardio training: running (either outdoors or on a treadmill), biking, using an elliptical trainer, stair climber, rollerblading, and many more. There are several reasons why you should include cardio training in your natural weight loss or maintenance program. One of the main reasons is that doing cardio helps your body to burn more fat. Cardio will really get your heart pumping and will also put your body in a prime stat to burn more calories. Another reason to do cardio is overall conditioning. Do you find yourself getting easily winded when doing normal things like going up a staircase? Cardio training will help your body get used to that type of work. In summary, for a natural weight loss or maintenance program to truly be effective and work over a longer period of time, you need to include proper nutrition, resistance training, and cardio training. These are the three pillars of your program and if any one of them is missing or being in some way neglected you will find that your program is not working as well as you might have hoped. When it comes to using supplements, remember that they are only supplemental to what you are already doing, hence the name supplements. Continue Your Education With an MBA Online

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Christopher Luck What is a good way for me to advance my education despite having no real time to myself? I get busy with work and it is difficult for me to consider extending my education when I would have to commute to a campus, find time to go to classes, and then still work. One way I found that can help busy professionals continue their education without even having to leave the house is by pursuing an MBA online. By working on an MBA online, you dont have to worry about commuting, going to classes at inconvenient times, or even scheduling around your job. An MBA is a powerful and helpful degree. Also known as a Masters of Business Administration, an MBA is the next logical step in education to extend your business career. However, it is quandary since you are working hard to move up, but also have to find a way to continue your education. The perfect the way to do that is to work on your MBA online. By doing so, you can avoid all the time constraints that go along with a traditional graduate program, plus you can work on your classes when you have the time and when your busy schedule permits. The best way to find an MBA online is to check through a search engine first. There are a number of universities and business colleges that offer MBAs over the internet as part of their normal curriculum. There are also universities that specialize in online programs including MBA online schools. No matter which kind you prefer, you may want to begin your search on a search engine. So how does an MBA online work? You will likely have to first apply, probably online. If it is a traditional school offering an online program, you may have to visit the campus to get everything arranged. Once you are in, you will log in through the internet to take each of the classes required to complete your degree. Depending on the MBA online program, some may be self-pacing. More often, though, they will be on a weekly schedule, but you will be able to actually do the work when you get time. There will still be texts to read and activities to do, but all of it will be available to you from your desktop. Finding time, as a professional, to continue your education can be very difficult. You are busy with your work and with what time you have, it would probably be nearly impossible to find classes that would work for you. The answer can very possibly be an MBA online program. By pursuing your degree online you can avoid the time constraints that come with a traditional program. You can work around your schedule, do so from your home, and thus be able to get your MBA even with a busy work schedule that isnt consistent. An MBA is an important degree if you want to move on in the business world, and it can be time consuming. So, consider working on your MBA online to help your career and education progress. Cappuccino: Monk’s Hood or Just Good?

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Marjorie Dorfman “Wake Up And Smell The Cappuccino!” ~ The Dorfman Archives The two years I spent in Italy in the 1970s marked in some ways the best times of my life. I was a student in a small Umbrian city, (Perugia, where they make all that wonderful candy that does all those not so wonderful things to your teeth, but who cares). There I learned more from living each day than I ever gleaned from any version of Dantes Inferno and/ or Paradiso. The ways of the world are universal; the human element uniting all of us with a common thread. Italian men, however, represent a particular work in progress I shall call the Peacock Syndrome. I wish to acknowledge that this condition is often found in men of all ethnic backgrounds, persuasions and nationalities as well, but in smaller degrees. (Women, Italian and otherwise, have other problems). My point will be illustrated with a picture that hopefully will neither need one thousand words nor ignite the cosmopolitan masculine world against me. I will never forget a February morning in Perugia when I spied from my warm perch a young Italian man sipping an expresso at a caf on the towns main street, Corso Vanucci. (Maybe it was really anti-freeze he was drinking. Who knows?) Anyway, it was a memorable sight because he was seated directly opposite me, but OUTSIDE, despite the freezing temperatures and chopping winds that ripped through the tablecloth. Still, the handsome devil wore no coat. His shirt was open down to his waist as if it were high August. Was he not the proud peacock showing off so that passing women could not fail to notice the multitude of virile hairs (peacock feathers) that had frozen upon his chest? That image has never left me, nor has my love for Italian culture and cappuccino, that frothy confection of milk and expresso topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with cinnamon! My adventures in this charming city were not limited to Italian men, although I did experience la Dolce Vita in my own particular way. My sense of bad timing originated here where I tasted my first cappuccino some three weeks before I had to return to America. The latteria (dairy store) was hidden behind a small narrow street (calle) that I discovered one day completely by accident. To make things worse, it was the best cappuccino I ever tasted. The cream was scrumptious and I often had two or three cappuccinos in one sitting just to down some more of it. I even commented to a fellow student that I would have done just as well plastering the contents directly onto my hips and thighs instead of drinking it, as that was where it was headed anyway! Where did this wonderful beverage come from? Coffee originated in the Ottoman Empire and was first introduced to the West by Italian traders. At first, Pope Clement VII was urged by his advisors to consider this favorite drink of infidels a threat. After he tasted it, however, he succumbed to a perogative that women have relied on for years: he changed his mind. Pope Clement actually baptized the delicious drink, making it an acceptable Christian beverage. No one knows for sure exactly where cappuccino came from, but there are a few sneaky suspicions. The most popular belief is that the drink gets its name from the robes and cowl of The Capuchin Monks habit. How so, say you? Well, read on. The Capuchin order of friars played an important role in restoring Catholicism to Reformation Europe. Its Italian name came from the long, pointed cowl or cappuccino, derived from capuccio, meaning hood. Capuchin was later used as the name (first recorded in English in 1785) for a type of monkey with a tuft of black cowl-like hair. The first use of the word cappuccino in English is recorded in 1948. Whether or not this exquisite beverage was invented by the Capuchin monks is unknown. It is a fact however, that a properly prepared cappuccino of expresso and steamed milk leaves a brown ring along the rim of the cup much like the edge of the monks cowl. (Does this mean there is still hope for the ring around my bathtub to become famous?) Have you ever wondered exactly how Cappuccino is made? Well, the basis for any cappuccino worth its salt (or grinds) is a strong blend of Expresso coffee with added milk or frothy cream topped with chocolate powder. The correct proportions are 1/3 expresso, 2/3 froth. To produce the froth, fill a small jug to 1/3 with fresh milk. Insert the expresso machine-frothing arm to just below the surface and turn on the steam, gradually lowering the jug but keeping the arm in place. Add half of the froth into the expresso coffee and sprinkle with cocoa powder or grated chocolate. Add the rest of the froth and top with more cocoa. (If you do it right, the process might never end.) Cappuccino is more than just a coffee or a flavor or a process. Now one can find chocolate cappuccino cookies and even lollipops that can offer an authentic cappuccino experience even to toddlers! Whether you the drink fancy or plain, with chocolate or cinnamon experience even to toddlers! Whether you take the drink fancy or plain, with chocolate or cinnamon or just plain cocoa powder, cappuccino is a delight that should be enjoyed often. It is unique to the Italian culinary culture and cannot help but force even the most unimaginative among us to contemplate misty Roman afternoons and at least one balmy bistro night! Courtesy of Dream Ship Coffees, Teas and Treasures Classic Almond Cappuccino 2 ounces cold milk 2 oz. hot expresso 1/2 oz. Almond syrup (orgeat) Ground nutmeg for dusting Steam the syrup and milk together and allow it to sit. Prepare the expresso and pour into 6-oz. cup. Gently add the hot steamed milk until the cup is about 2/3 full. Spoon the light foam over the top of the hot cappuccino to form a peak and dust with nutmeg. 8 ValuableTips On How To Survive a Dumping

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Billy Baker Unfortunately there is no magic formula for surviving a dumping. However, to find someone you want to spend your life with, you have to move on and plan a realistic time scale to move forward. Dating tips are just that, as everyone is an individual, and what works for one does not work for another. However there are fairly standard steps you can devise to succeed. There is no reason that you have to spend the rest of your life going out on your own, and eating solitary TV dinners. 1. DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY You may have been dropped, but it may not be your fault. You may have a holistic approach to your emotional life, but maybe your date did not. Even if you accept that the break up is coming, it still hurts, it is traumatic. Age is not a great help here, it is always difficult to accept rejection. 2. WALLOW AND GRIEVE FOR YOUR LOSS Accept the fact that the first couple of days are the hardest mentally and that once you have survived that you are on a roll to picking yourself up, and dusting yourself and getting back into the fray. If you feel like bawling your eyes out, and eating buckets of cookies, that’s O. K. for a couple of days. If you need to get help and support from your friends then ask them to help. The most damaging thing that you can do to your self esteem is to go back and contact your ex. That means e- mail, text and telephone, try and let it go. You are trying to pick yourself up to start again, there is no point in going back. You have to try and bury it with dignity, and whatever you have to do to achieve that, then go for it. If it means moping around, then mope. If it means having a makeover, then do it. 3. BURY ANY EVIDENCE OF YOUR EX Whilst you are feeling annoyed, angry or disgruntled, and let down, destroy any painful reminders of your ex, such as photos. Try not to listen to music that meant something to both of you, it is OK to wallow in your grief, but do not rub salt in an open wound. This does not mean that you will never listen to that music again, you may even speak to your ex again, but give yourself an even money chance to heal now. 4. MAKE A LIST Where you have taken down the photographs of your ex, replace it with a list. Draw up a list of the things, that really annoyed you about your ex. NoI don’t believe you - there has to be something!, if you are thinking he/she was perfect, you are idealizing him. The more humorous this list is the better you will feel, give yourself a laugh even if only through a veil of tears. Part of the pain of being dumped is that it is something that is outside your control, you may accept that the relationship was pear shaped, and maybe you wanted to end it, but being dumped meant someone else did it to you. You will survive this, focus on the bad things, and try and accept that you perhaps should have wanted out anyway. There are occasions when you think that everything was hunky dorey, and it comes a bolt out of the blue. That is tougher to accept, but accept it you must. Strange things happen in life, but there is no way that you can make someone love you. The reasons people fall in love are as diverse as the people who do it, butthere is no way you can make someone do so. If you have done this then attempt to learn a valuable lesson, don’t invest time in going down that road in the future. 5. SURVIVE THE FIRST WEEK Right you have managed the first couple of days and you are now thinking what next. Find the hope levels inside you, underneath the layers we all have different hope levels. When Pandora opened the box, all the evil in the world came out, but left inside the box was hope. It is our ultimate defence that we believe that a situation will get better. If you are struggling to find hope then dig down deeper. Hope stops you wallowing in your own misery, if you need to mope, do it in the early on, and then set a time limit. Wallowing for too long a period of time, makes you feel worse, and reduces your self esteem. Set realistic time limits to move on as fast as possible. Yes I know it hurts, we all know that because it has happened to every single one of us at sometime or another. If youstill have a desperate need to wallow then say to yourself - yes I can every day from say 3.00. P.M. - 3.30 P.M., but focus on getting your head back together in the remaining times of the day. Force yourself to get out although it may be the last thing on the planet that you feel like doing. Try exercising during the week, and see how much better you feel afterwards. 6. PAMPER YOURSELF AND BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE You have been through the mangle, but don’t let yourself be destroyed. Think about all the things that make you a unique person, as well as the reasons why you deserve to be loved in your own right. Everyone has the right to be loved, so don’t lose the sight of this fact. Have a manicure and a pedicure, go and getsome retail therapy and enjoy yourself. Even if you are a guy buy yourself something that you have been wanting for ages. Go on treat yourself. Make yourself feel important and valued as a person. 7. GET BACK IN THE DATING ARENA After a month your psyche should be starting to heal, think about your gaols, what do you want out of dating, and make it happen.(at least in terms of dates rather than a long term relationship. 8. ENJOY YOURSELF Don’t start taking dating too seriously, it is meant to be fun not a sophisticated type of torture. Paper Dolls Retain Timeless Appeal

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Tania Penwell Diamonds may be a womans best friend, but a little girls best friend is definitely her doll. While dolls are usually associated with girls, paper dolls are made and collected by young and old alike irrespective of their gender. France is the place where paper dolls first appeared. Their origin can be traced to the reign of Louis XV when paper dolls were very popular among the French royals. Paper dolls emerged in England at about the same time, and they were used to convey moral stories in an attractive manner. In America, paper was initially very expensive so paper dolls were a luxury item that children took very good care of. Once paper became cheaper and more readily available, paper dolls were created on cardboard on a mass scale. Paper dolls were hand-painted and wore different types of clothes. Some were smartly dressed like European film stars, while others came only with underwear on! As early paper doll clothes came without tabs, people used sealing wax to stick clothes on to them. Patterned cloth, lace, and tissue paper were used to create clothes for paper dolls. Lots of girls and women earned a living by selling paper dolls. Men, women, kids, and animals are commonly employed in advertisement campaigns, but imagine dolls being used to advertise various products! Paper dolls were used to advertise new types of clothes and designs in various popular womens magazines, and their appeal was so great that they began to find place in newspaper supplements too. Paper dolls depicted clowns, animals, ordinary people and, most importantly, celebrities from the world of films and music. Obtaining these dolls is every modern day paper doll collectors dream. If you thought only kids collect paper dolls, think again! Adults collect paper dolls just as they do coins and stamps. Paper dolls represent fashion, celebrities, inanimate objects, and animals and are great fun to collect. They are also inexpensive. Adults who collect paper dolls say it reminds them of their childhood days. You can collect on the basis of a particular subject, for example, movie stars. As paper dolls grew in popularity they came to be sold in books. Many companies specialized in the making of these dolls. People who bought the books had to cut out the dolls, cloths, and accessories. Today, among paper dolls collectors, old books containing dolls and their clothes are a rage. They often fetch higher prices than dolls that have been cut. If you wish to start a paper doll collection buy from local artists and conventions. You can get in touch with other collectors via the Internet or placing ads in newspapers. Lots of greeting cards contain paper dolls. Keep a look out for them. Paper dolls are a great way to maintain peace at home and encourage creativity when your kids have a school vacation! These days, lots of paper doll templates can be downloaded from the Net. Encourage your kids to dress up dolls with crayons, bits of colored paper, and fabric. You can also ask them to make paper dolls resembling themselves! Let collecting paper dolls become a family affair! Tania Penwell is a regular contributor to The Doll Site, your guide to dolls of all kinds including paper dolls. Garden Dangers: Insect Family

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Katina Mooneyham Gardening is fun and rewarding, experienced by many throughout the spring, summer and sometimes even fall months. But there are dangers lurking behind that tomato plant, white picket fence and garden shed. In the insect world, many members can be dangerous. They can hide just out of sight. What can be done to rid the gardens of these pests? From traps to exterminators, from organic sprays to more conventional sprays there is something to get rid of these unwanted and sometimes deadly creatures. Pests in the Insect Family There are well more than a million different species in the insect world and many more related to insects. A few are beneficial and are not harmful to humans. But there are a few that have the notoriety of being a nuisance to human activities. Mosquitoes Mosquitoes are pests that are just another common observance of summer. But with the increasing West Nile and meningitis problems that have been associated with them, its no wonder people hate mosquitoes. Mosquito Control There are many ways to be rid of mosquitoes. But prevention is a must to keep the population down. Make sure all standing water in sources such as swimming pools, tires and buckets are all dumped. The female mosquito can lay hundreds even thousands of eggs in standing water. Sometimes the larva can be seen swimming about in these little pools of stagnant water. Removal of these stagnant pools is important to help decrease the spread of these annoyances. There are many sprays and lotions that keep mosquitoes at bay. The ones that are most effective are ones containing a chemical called DEET. DEET has been known to cause some reactions in people so caution should be taken just like with any chemical. Mosquitoes tend to stay away from citrus smells. The scented Geraniums are good plants to have in areas where humans may have interactions with mosquitoes. There are also citrus candles made for keeping away these pesky little insects. Bees and Wasps Bees and wasps and other flying insects are generally beneficial. Bees help pollinate flowers. Wasps are parasitic toward some harmful creatures such as caterpillars that can destroy a large area of crops. But if not dealt with properly, bees and wasps can be a danger. These insects are stinging insects and can deal a sting that is very painful. Some people have allergic reactions causing the need for immediate medical attention. Wasps are especially known for aggressive behaviors. A wasp known as the Yellow Jacket is very aggressive. Bees generally are not as aggressive. But a genetically altered version of honey bees often called Africanized Honey bees or Killer Bees are very aggressive and attacks have been known to take lives of their victims. Bee Control There are many ways to be rid of bees and wasps. These methods can include nest or hive control, chemical control and professional service control. Controlling the nest is a hard thing to do for bees and especially wasps. You first must remove the insects themselves. Most times this can be done with smoke used in bee culture, the raising of bees. Physical removal or relocation of the nest is possible but sometimes the chances of the nest being destroyed or injured can occur. Chemical sprays can be used to kill the bees and wasps. There are many commercial standard sprays at any home and garden store and most supermarkets carry these as well. Professional services, the exterminator services, are needed when bees and wasps have nests that are in extreme places such as inside a home, inside the insulation or high in trees or in hard to reach places. Basil: The King of Herbs

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Gwen Stewart One of the most popular herbs is Ocimum basilicum commonly called sweet basil. Often called the king of herbs, basil can be grown indoors or out. Sweet basil has inch-long, oval-pointed, dark green leaves and a clove-pepperish odour and taste. Sweet basil makes a handsome, bushy small plant, growing to a foot or more indoors. A purple-leafed variety, Dark Opal is decorative, makes a lovely houseplant, and is equally useful in cookery. Do not let basil bloom, or it will go to seed. Instead, pinch out the plant tops and they will grow into compact little bushes. Basil is an annual and grows 12 24 inches (30 60 cm) as the height varies according to the variety. Cultivation requirements for growing basil: full sun; light, well-drained, nutrient rich, slightly acidic soil; frequent watering (dont waterlog); will not tolerate cold; pinch off flower stalks for a longer season of leaf production. Basil can be easily started from seed or can be brought indoors at the end of the growing season. If you are bringing basil indoors, choose the most robust plants. Before the first frost, dig them out of the garden and pot them up in fresh potting soil. Basil can also be grown in pots outdoors and treated the same way when bringing them in for winter. Check for insects and if there is an infestation, spray with a soap and water spray. Gradually reverse the hardening off process by keeping the pots out of direct sunlight for about a week. The plants will become acclimatised to the lower light conditions they will experience indoors. Bring them inside and provide the conditions they need to continue growing. Basil requires at least five hours of sunlight a day to stay healthy and flavourful. If you are growing basil on the windowsill, turn regularly to ensure every side receives light. Dont let basil leaves touch the cold glass. Basil grows even better under fluorescent lights in the winter. Hang the lights 6 inches (15 cm) from plants and leave lights on for 14 hours a day. There are many cultivars of basil. Two that are particularly popular are: O. basilicum Dark Opal- only herb to win the All American Award of Excellence can be used the same as sweet basil; O. basilicum Citriodorum- strong lemon scent nice for tea and with chicken and fish. In the garden, basil can be planted with tomatoes as it helps to overcome both insects and disease. Basil also repels flies and mosquitoes. In the kitchen, use basil in tomato dishes (both raw and cooked), pesto, sauces, salad dressings, soups, fish dishes, mushroom dishes, egg and rice dishes, mixed with other herbs, omelettes, pasta dishes, vegetables such as carrots, eggplant, cabbage, squash, and zucchini. Use fresh leaves in salads and add fresh leaves to vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Basil can be used fresh, frozen, or dried. Use basil with discretion, as it is one of the few herbs that increase in flavour when heated.
